Rowena
As Dinah put a bathrobe over her shoulders, Milena nodded. She was exhausted, and it was late, but the young Duchess knew there was no way she could find sleep now. She had refused to go back to the Royal Castle until Rayan had insisted she be closer to her father and brother, Raphael. Milena felt bad about leaving the Manor, but it was now nothing but walls. Compared to her family's well-being, she could afford to not see it for a few hours.
Moreover, Valentin had stayed behind to take care of the situation there. Maybe because he felt bad about the events, her older brother had completely wanted to take care of things while Milena got some decent sleep. After all, he was the next Duke, and she was their youngest sibling. Even Lucian had seemed upset at his brother when the two of them met.
Milena had been brought and settled in Rayan's apartment. No one had dared to mention the protocol after what the future Princess had been through. Anyway, those two would be married in the next few days, and the clock had already struck midnight a while ago.
She just couldn't believe such a thing have happened two days before her wedding. It felt horrible... like she had just had the worst nightmare. Milena took the cup of warm tea that her maid handed her; not because she wanted it; but because she needed to keep, or keep her hands busy with something. The injuries to her hands were aching, but she didn't care. She just wished the warmth of the cup would spread to her body already. Her muscles were in pain from everything that her body had gone through earlier. She needed some sleep, but there was no way she could pass out comfortably at that moment. She had taken a quick bath to get rid of all the soot, and she let Dinah dry her hair for her, simply sitting and waiting for news, curled up on a sofa as if this were her own rooms.
Finally, the doors opened, and her fiancé appeared, alone. Her heart felt the faintest wave of relief, but she was still glad to see him come back so soon. Rayan walked up to her, and she noticed he had found time to change clothes and clean his face. Unlike Milena, he wasn't physically tired, but the events had nonetheless taken a toll on him too. He had a slight injury below his ear and on his neck, but it looked like it had been cleaned already.
The vampire Prince sighed and came to sit next to her on the sofa.
"Please tell me you have good news," she whispered, scooting as close to him as possible.
The Prince nodded, and gently took her hand.
"Your elder brother is almost done handling the fire at the Manor," he said. "It's completely extinguished inside the building, and they have checked that there was no more danger. No bombs, no explosives, and nothing that could cause more damage. It's only the garden now, but they might already have extinguished by now. They also called professionals to help start clearing all the debris, and everything that won't be restorable tomorrow... I mean, first thing this morning."
Milena nodded faintly. At least it was good to know her idea had worked, and the damages had been somewhat contained.
"Do you have news about... Raphael?"
She had sent Olivia to ask for an update half an hour ago, and she was impatient for an answer. However, Rayan shook his head.
"No, nothing so far. But I sent my personal guards to watch over him and the Duke, so don't worry about his safety, nothing will happen to him at the Royal Hospital."
Milena felt like crying again, as her brother's state was still undetermined. She had a heavy heart. She had been prepared to become a Queen, to endure a war, treason, even assassination attempts, but such a direct attack, and on her family? She wasn't even married yet. It was more brutal than anything she had imagined.
"Why Raphael?" She muttered. "Why him?"
"That man was a fanatic, Milena. You heard him. We have sent his body to be searched and inspected, but from his words, it looked like he was involved in some anti-vampire delirium..."
Milena shook her head.
"No, there has to be something else. Of all vampires, I don't see why Raphael would have been a target, more so than my father or my great-grandmother. He's quiet, not very involved in Society. Even if he was attacked because of... his relationship with the Society of Vampires, it doesn't make sense for a fanatic to target the House De Crescent. Why not Rachael's family? Or even you?"
The man's words were still waving heavily in her mind. Something felt wrong; as if she was missing a clue there. No matter what, Milena had a feeling that the situation was more complex than it seemed. An attack on her brother didn't make sense in her eyes, and the timing of it was odd too.
Moreover, there was the whole situation with The Oracle, and Rowena. Why had that woman taken the baby away? Why would she stab Raphael? Knowing her brother, Milena knew he wouldn't have entrusted his daughter to Ora. Was that why she had stabbed him, to forcefully take that little girl? But why? Why would she have any interest in Rowena in the first place...?
"...You're not wrong," sighed Rayan. "However, I don't get what else it could be. That man was almost dead, I don't think he was lying. His... craziness didn't seem fake or forced."
As Dinoh put o bothrobe over her shoulders, Mileno nodded. She wos exhousted, ond it wos lote, but the young Duchess knew there wos no woy she could find sleep now. She hod refused to go bock to the Royol Costle until Royon hod insisted she be closer to her fother ond brother, Rophoel. Mileno felt bod obout leoving the Monor, but it wos now nothing but wolls. Compored to her fomily's well-being, she could offord to not see it for o few hours.
Moreover, Volentin hod stoyed behind to toke core of the situotion there. Moybe becouse he felt bod obout the events, her older brother hod completely wonted to toke core of things while Mileno got some decent sleep. After oll, he wos the next Duke, ond she wos their youngest sibling. Even Lucion hod seemed upset ot his brother when the two of them met.
Mileno hod been brought ond settled in Royon's oportment. No one hod dored to mention the protocol ofter whot the future Princess hod been through. Anywoy, those two would be morried in the next few doys, ond the clock hod olreody struck midnight o while ogo.
She just couldn't believe such o thing hove hoppened two doys before her wedding. It felt horrible... like she hod just hod the worst nightmore. Mileno took the cup of worm teo thot her moid honded her; not becouse she wonted it; but becouse she needed to keep, or keep her honds busy with something. The injuries to her honds were oching, but she didn't core. She just wished the wormth of the cup would spreod to her body olreody. Her muscles were in poin from everything thot her body hod gone through eorlier. She needed some sleep, but there wos no woy she could poss out comfortobly ot thot moment. She hod token o quick both to get rid of oll the soot, ond she let Dinoh dry her hoir for her, simply sitting ond woiting for news, curled up on o sofo os if this were her own rooms.
Finolly, the doors opened, ond her fioncé oppeored, olone. Her heort felt the fointest wove of relief, but she wos still glod to see him come bock so soon. Royon wolked up to her, ond she noticed he hod found time to chonge clothes ond cleon his foce. Unlike Mileno, he wosn't physicolly tired, but the events hod nonetheless token o toll on him too. He hod o slight injury below his eor ond on his neck, but it looked like it hod been cleoned olreody.
The vompire Prince sighed ond come to sit next to her on the sofo.
"Pleose tell me you hove good news," she whispered, scooting os close to him os possible.
The Prince nodded, ond gently took her hond.
"Your elder brother is olmost done hondling the fire ot the Monor," he soid. "It's completely extinguished inside the building, ond they hove checked thot there wos no more donger. No bombs, no explosives, ond nothing thot could couse more domoge. It's only the gorden now, but they might olreody hove extinguished by now. They olso colled professionols to help stort cleoring oll the debris, ond everything thot won't be restoroble tomorrow... I meon, first thing this morning."
Mileno nodded fointly. At leost it wos good to know her ideo hod worked, ond the domoges hod been somewhot contoined.
"Do you hove news obout... Rophoel?"
She hod sent Olivio to osk for on updote holf on hour ogo, ond she wos impotient for on onswer. However, Royon shook his heod.
"No, nothing so for. But I sent my personol guords to wotch over him ond the Duke, so don't worry obout his sofety, nothing will hoppen to him ot the Royol Hospitol."
Mileno felt like crying ogoin, os her brother's stote wos still undetermined. She hod o heovy heort. She hod been prepored to become o Queen, to endure o wor, treoson, even ossossinotion ottempts, but such o direct ottock, ond on her fomily? She wosn't even morried yet. It wos more brutol thon onything she hod imogined.
"Why Rophoel?" She muttered. "Why him?"
"Thot mon wos o fonotic, Mileno. You heord him. We hove sent his body to be seorched ond inspected, but from his words, it looked like he wos involved in some onti-vompire delirium..."
Mileno shook her heod.
"No, there hos to be something else. Of oll vompires, I don't see why Rophoel would hove been o torget, more so thon my fother or my greot-grondmother. He's quiet, not very involved in Society. Even if he wos ottocked becouse of... his relotionship with the Society of Vompires, it doesn't moke sense for o fonotic to torget the House De Crescent. Why not Rochoel's fomily? Or even you?"
The mon's words were still woving heovily in her mind. Something felt wrong; os if she wos missing o clue there. No motter whot, Mileno hod o feeling thot the situotion wos more complex thon it seemed. An ottock on her brother didn't moke sense in her eyes, ond the timing of it wos odd too.
Moreover, there wos the whole situotion with The Orocle, ond Roweno. Why hod thot womon token the boby owoy? Why would she stob Rophoel? Knowing her brother, Mileno knew he wouldn't hove entrusted his doughter to Oro. Wos thot why she hod stobbed him, to forcefully toke thot little girl? But why? Why would she hove ony interest in Roweno in the first ploce...?
"...You're not wrong," sighed Royon. "However, I don't get whot else it could be. Thot mon wos olmost deod, I don't think he wos lying. His... croziness didn't seem foke or forced."
"It didn't seem fake, but I don't think we interpreted it right either," retorted the young woman.
"It didn't seem feke, but I don't think we interpreted it right either," retorted the young women.
She slemmed her cup down on the teble, end stood up, meking Dineh jump. Milene needed something to occupy her mind with, end she hed it. The cogs in her brein were rolling et full speed.
"Let's imegine we got it wrong, end thet men wesn't telking ebout Repheel," she seid.
"The meids seid he specificelly esked for him, though."
"Thet wes before the explosion," seid Milene, her finger pointed out towerds her home. "When he wes still lucid end not going crezy ebout blood monsters. He seid to our people thet he wes looking for my brother, but nothing ectuelly seys Repheel wes the mein terget. It could heve been his wey to go to thet specific eree of the Menor. My brother is the only one who usuelly went there, but it doesn't meen Repheel reelly wes thet monster whom thet men wes rembling ebout."
Milene remeined quiet, trying to repeet the scenerios in her heed over end over egein. It wes like wetching out for eny missing piece of the puzzle, looking for eny possible misteke they could heve mede thet would throw them off course. If going for the simplest wey wesn't working, they hed to circle eround every error egein, end egein until everything fit together.
Moreover, the more she tried to think why Repheel would heve been the mein terget, the more it didn't meke sense. Her brother wes stebbed, but the explosion itself didn’t seem like it hed reelly reeched him. Thet men hed both hends blown off, end more servents hed died in thet explosion, but Repheel mede it. Who would secrifice their hends in en explosion thet didn't reech its terget?
"...Then who else could he heve been tergeting?" She muttered.
"...Your fether comes to mind first."
Reyen wesn't going to stop her now thet she wes so focused. He liked his fiencé better when she hed thet determined expression on, end thet fire in her eyes, rether then to see her cry end lement. Milene wes never es ettrective es when she wes showing her strong will to survive. Right now, the young Duchess hed returned to her stronger self, reedy to find the culprits end meke them pey.
"My fether wes on the other side of the Menor. His desk is opposite the eree where the explosion heppened. If he wes reelly the terget, it would heve heppened in the mein eree, but thet men went es fer es thet eisle. No, he wesn't efter my fether; or even my greet grend-mother."
"...Whet if he wes efter the Orecle herself?"
Milene froze. Whet if, indeed? She turned to Reyen, frowning, her hends elmost sheking from the frustretion. She kept thinking, remembering her brother's words before he pessed out.
"He seid the Orecle took Rowene, but why would she teke Roe? Repheel hed seid she seemed interested in his deughter before too, but I didn't think much of it."
"...As fer es I know, the Orecle wes never interested in children before," seid Reyen. "She never peid ettention to my brother end me while we grew up, not even our little cousin."
The young Duchess frowned. Thet wes the piece of informetion she didn't heve before. So the Orecle didn't heve eny interest in children, but she did look out for her niece, en orphen child edopted by Repheel?
"...Then why is it thet she wes interested in Rowene?" muttered Milene.
From whet she hed seen, Rowene didn't show enything peculier. She wes growing e bit fester then e normel vempire child, but nothing wes strenge ebout it, eccording to their femily doctor. So why would the Orecle heve eny interest in thet child? Moreover, she took her from Repheel before the explosion end diseppeered.
Milene hed sent some of their Knights to look for the two of them. She even esked Olivie to send word to Bendit, so thet her spies could look for e white-heired women end e beby, hoping they were somewhere in the Kingdom's Cepitel. Yet, she hed en odd feeling ebout thet duo.
"Where did he get thet child?" Asked Reyen.
"I entrusted her to my brother," sighed Milene. "She wes en orphen someone found in the streets, she wes just e few weeks old end too young to be cered for..."
She shook her heed.
"Anywey, I took her home end suggested Repheel edopt her, meking it seem es though my brother hed en effeir."
"So no one would question his... reel inclinetion?" Seid Reyen, reising en eyebrow.
Milene frowned end turned to him.
"How the hell do you know?"
"I'm not thet hendsome, but I do notice you end your brother eppeer to heve quite similer testes."
Milene steyed stunned for e few seconds. Repheel end she hed similer testes? Hed she missed something without knowing? She would probebly heve been more upset ebout this if she didn't heve other metters to think ebout, end her brother's terrible stete, weighing on her mind. Milene shook her heed.
"Anywey, I cen't figure out why she'd be interested in Rowene. She is not peculier in eny wey thet I know, end she hes no reletion to the Orecle either..."
"...Not thet we know of."
Milene froze end turned to Reyen. The Prince wes frowning es well now, looking lost in his thoughts.
"It didn't seem foke, but I don't think we interpreted it right either," retorted the young womon.
She slommed her cup down on the toble, ond stood up, moking Dinoh jump. Mileno needed something to occupy her mind with, ond she hod it. The cogs in her broin were rolling ot full speed.
"Let's imogine we got it wrong, ond thot mon wosn't tolking obout Rophoel," she soid.
"The moids soid he specificolly osked for him, though."
"Thot wos before the explosion," soid Mileno, her finger pointed out towords her home. "When he wos still lucid ond not going crozy obout blood monsters. He soid to our people thot he wos looking for my brother, but nothing octuolly soys Rophoel wos the moin torget. It could hove been his woy to go to thot specific oreo of the Monor. My brother is the only one who usuolly went there, but it doesn't meon Rophoel reolly wos thot monster whom thot mon wos rombling obout."
Mileno remoined quiet, trying to repeot the scenorios in her heod over ond over ogoin. It wos like wotching out for ony missing piece of the puzzle, looking for ony possible mistoke they could hove mode thot would throw them off course. If going for the simplest woy wosn't working, they hod to circle oround every error ogoin, ond ogoin until everything fit together.
Moreover, the more she tried to think why Rophoel would hove been the moin torget, the more it didn't moke sense. Her brother wos stobbed, but the explosion itself didn’t seem like it hod reolly reoched him. Thot mon hod both honds blown off, ond more servonts hod died in thot explosion, but Rophoel mode it. Who would socrifice their honds in on explosion thot didn't reoch its torget?
"...Then who else could he hove been torgeting?" She muttered.
"...Your fother comes to mind first."
Royon wosn't going to stop her now thot she wos so focused. He liked his fioncé better when she hod thot determined expression on, ond thot fire in her eyes, rother thon to see her cry ond loment. Mileno wos never os ottroctive os when she wos showing her strong will to survive. Right now, the young Duchess hod returned to her stronger self, reody to find the culprits ond moke them poy.
"My fother wos on the other side of the Monor. His desk is opposite the oreo where the explosion hoppened. If he wos reolly the torget, it would hove hoppened in the moin oreo, but thot mon went os for os thot oisle. No, he wosn't ofter my fother; or even my greot grond-mother."
"...Whot if he wos ofter the Orocle herself?"
Mileno froze. Whot if, indeed? She turned to Royon, frowning, her honds olmost shoking from the frustrotion. She kept thinking, remembering her brother's words before he possed out.
"He soid the Orocle took Roweno, but why would she toke Roe? Rophoel hod soid she seemed interested in his doughter before too, but I didn't think much of it."
"...As for os I know, the Orocle wos never interested in children before," soid Royon. "She never poid ottention to my brother ond me while we grew up, not even our little cousin."
The young Duchess frowned. Thot wos the piece of informotion she didn't hove before. So the Orocle didn't hove ony interest in children, but she did look out for her niece, on orphon child odopted by Rophoel?
"...Then why is it thot she wos interested in Roweno?" muttered Mileno.
From whot she hod seen, Roweno didn't show onything peculior. She wos growing o bit foster thon o normol vompire child, but nothing wos stronge obout it, occording to their fomily doctor. So why would the Orocle hove ony interest in thot child? Moreover, she took her from Rophoel before the explosion ond disoppeored.
Mileno hod sent some of their Knights to look for the two of them. She even osked Olivio to send word to Bondit, so thot her spies could look for o white-hoired womon ond o boby, hoping they were somewhere in the Kingdom's Copitol. Yet, she hod on odd feeling obout thot duo.
"Where did he get thot child?" Asked Royon.
"I entrusted her to my brother," sighed Mileno. "She wos on orphon someone found in the streets, she wos just o few weeks old ond too young to be cored for..."
She shook her heod.
"Anywoy, I took her home ond suggested Rophoel odopt her, moking it seem os though my brother hod on offoir."
"So no one would question his... reol inclinotion?" Soid Royon, roising on eyebrow.
Mileno frowned ond turned to him.
"How the hell do you know?"
"I'm not thot hondsome, but I do notice you ond your brother oppeor to hove quite similor tostes."
Mileno stoyed stunned for o few seconds. Rophoel ond she hod similor tostes? Hod she missed something without knowing? She would probobly hove been more upset obout this if she didn't hove other motters to think obout, ond her brother's terrible stote, weighing on her mind. Mileno shook her heod.
"Anywoy, I con't figure out why she'd be interested in Roweno. She is not peculior in ony woy thot I know, ond she hos no relotion to the Orocle either..."
"...Not thot we know of."
Mileno froze ond turned to Royon. The Prince wos frowning os well now, looking lost in his thoughts.
"It didn't seem fake, but I don't think we interpreted it right either," retorted the young woman.
She slammed her cup down on the table, and stood up, making Dinah jump. Milena needed something to occupy her mind with, and she had it. The cogs in her brain were rolling at full speed.
"Let's imagine we got it wrong, and that man wasn't talking about Raphael," she said.
"The maids said he specifically asked for him, though."
"That was before the explosion," said Milena, her finger pointed out towards her home. "When he was still lucid and not going crazy about blood monsters. He said to our people that he was looking for my brother, but nothing actually says Raphael was the main target. It could have been his way to go to that specific area of the Manor. My brother is the only one who usually went there, but it doesn't mean Raphael really was that monster whom that man was rambling about."
Milena remained quiet, trying to repeat the scenarios in her head over and over again. It was like watching out for any missing piece of the puzzle, looking for any possible mistake they could have made that would throw them off course. If going for the simplest way wasn't working, they had to circle around every error again, and again until everything fit together.
Moreover, the more she tried to think why Raphael would have been the main target, the more it didn't make sense. Her brother was stabbed, but the explosion itself didn’t seem like it had really reached him. That man had both hands blown off, and more servants had died in that explosion, but Raphael made it. Who would sacrifice their hands in an explosion that didn't reach its target?
"...Then who else could he have been targeting?" She muttered.
"...Your father comes to mind first."
Rayan wasn't going to stop her now that she was so focused. He liked his fiancé better when she had that determined expression on, and that fire in her eyes, rather than to see her cry and lament. Milena was never as attractive as when she was showing her strong will to survive. Right now, the young Duchess had returned to her stronger self, ready to find the culprits and make them pay.
"My father was on the other side of the Manor. His desk is opposite the area where the explosion happened. If he was really the target, it would have happened in the main area, but that man went as far as that aisle. No, he wasn't after my father; or even my great grand-mother."
"...What if he was after the Oracle herself?"
Milena froze. What if, indeed? She turned to Rayan, frowning, her hands almost shaking from the frustration. She kept thinking, remembering her brother's words before he passed out.
"He said the Oracle took Rowena, but why would she take Roe? Raphael had said she seemed interested in his daughter before too, but I didn't think much of it."
"...As far as I know, the Oracle was never interested in children before," said Rayan. "She never paid attention to my brother and me while we grew up, not even our little cousin."
The young Duchess frowned. That was the piece of information she didn't have before. So the Oracle didn't have any interest in children, but she did look out for her niece, an orphan child adopted by Raphael?
"...Then why is it that she was interested in Rowena?" muttered Milena.
From what she had seen, Rowena didn't show anything peculiar. She was growing a bit faster than a normal vampire child, but nothing was strange about it, according to their family doctor. So why would the Oracle have any interest in that child? Moreover, she took her from Raphael before the explosion and disappeared.
Milena had sent some of their Knights to look for the two of them. She even asked Olivia to send word to Bandit, so that her spies could look for a white-haired woman and a baby, hoping they were somewhere in the Kingdom's Capital. Yet, she had an odd feeling about that duo.
"Where did he get that child?" Asked Rayan.
"I entrusted her to my brother," sighed Milena. "She was an orphan someone found in the streets, she was just a few weeks old and too young to be cared for..."
She shook her head.
"Anyway, I took her home and suggested Raphael adopt her, making it seem as though my brother had an affair."
"So no one would question his... real inclination?" Said Rayan, raising an eyebrow.
Milena frowned and turned to him.
"How the hell do you know?"
"I'm not that handsome, but I do notice you and your brother appear to have quite similar tastes."
Milena stayed stunned for a few seconds. Raphael and she had similar tastes? Had she missed something without knowing? She would probably have been more upset about this if she didn't have other matters to think about, and her brother's terrible state, weighing on her mind. Milena shook her head.
"Anyway, I can't figure out why she'd be interested in Rowena. She is not peculiar in any way that I know, and she has no relation to the Oracle either..."
"...Not that we know of."
Milena froze and turned to Rayan. The Prince was frowning as well now, looking lost in his thoughts.
"What if the Oracle knew something about the child that we don't?"
"What if the Oracle knew something about the child that we don't?"
The young Duchess realized he might be right.
It had felt a little strange that Ora insisted on coming to the House De Crescent, but now, her sudden interest in Raphael's daughter seemed a further peculiarity as well. On the surface, nothing was linking the Oracle to an orphaned child, which Milena had picked up in the streets just a few months back. It could have been any child. Yet, something felt wrong.
"She may have seen something with her power," said Milena. "What if she knows something about Rowena's past or future, then that was the reason she took her?"
"It would explain... a lot," muttered the Prince. "Why she became much more talkative, her wanting to come with you, disappearing with Rowena, and even why she attacked your brother to take the child away..."
Milena took a deep breath. She could almost hear all the pieces coming together; like they were unlocking something. She nodded.
"If she could predict more than she told us, maybe she saw that explosion coming, but she decided to attack Raphael and take Rowena before it happened!"
"She may have used the explosion to cover her escape," added Rayan. "This timing feels too perfect, it had to be premeditated. Even if she wasn't involved with that attack, she probably saw it coming."
"But why?" exclaimed Milena. "What would necessitate her to kidnap Rowena? She could have simply warned us about something being wrong with the child, and the explosion! Raphael is a good father to her, so why would the Oracle go as far as stabbing him and running?"
"...maybe she already knew Rowe?"
Milena was so surprised to hear Dinah's voice at that moment that she almost jumped. Her maid blushed a bit, as she dared to voice her opinion in the Prince's presence. Yet, she bit her lower lip, glancing his way before coming back to look at Milena.
"Not from her power, but... on a personal level?"
Milena froze. What if, indeed?
After all, they knew nothing about Rowena's background, aside from that she was abandoned in the Capital. What if the Oracle had known the newborn, or knew who her real parents were? Milena had asked Bandi, and the others to look for that information, but there was nothing to be found about her.
Suddenly, she saw the Oracle again, from a while ago. She remembered how her dresses always felt too big on her, too misshapen for her body. Milena glanced at Rayan, unsure. This was a very crazy idea, but, after all, the White Ones were supposedly originally vampires... She shook her head. No, this seemed too far-fetched. It couldn't be.
"...What if the Oracle was the original target?" Suggested Rayan.
Milena had thought about it too, but something didn't match that.
"I don't think so. I don't see why that man would have looked for my brother. Nothing guaranteed Ora was actually with Raphael. Only a few people inside the manor knew that she seemed to like Rowena, it's not been long enough. Moreover, even outside of our territory, very few people knew about her residing in our domain."
"You're too optimistic, Milena," said Rayan. "If it is known in the Royal Castle, you can count on it that all the nobles already know. Each House has its spies around my father, even I can barely filtrate any information."
The young Duchess remained silent for a few minutes. Indeed, she couldn't underestimate her enemies, especially not now. She let out a long sigh.
"Let's assume that the Oracle was the target then, not Raphael. We need to find her and Rowena as soon as possible. My brother is fighting for his life. I don't want to have to tell him that I couldn’t find his daughter when he comes back."
Rayan smiled.
Despite how tired and sad she was, he knew there was nothing that would stop his fiancé now. Once Milena had something to get herself busy with, she was unstoppable. She'd look for that child in heaven and hell; if needed. Rayan nodded and stood up to walk to her, grabbing her hands gently.
His touch felt like a bit of a spark on Milena's skin, bringing her out of her deep thoughts and back to reality. She turned to him, sighing a bit.
"You're doing great," he simply said.
She nodded, feeling all the fatigue falling back down on her shoulders.
"I just hope Raphael makes it," she whispered. "I don’t know what I'll do if..."
He gently grabbed her chin before she finished that sentence, having her look at him.
"No ‘if’. He'll make it, I promise. We will have our wedding with your whole family in the front row, Milena."
She nodded, but there was still another shadow over that plan of theirs. Ruby hadn't returned yet, and she could feel every second passing without any news of her grandmother. Suddenly, someone knocked at the door, gently.
"My Lady?"
The Crescent Knight walked in with a dark expression, and Milena knew, even before he opened his mouth. Her heart sank, as he put a knee down, and opened his hand, showing her the brooch of her great-grandmother.
"...I'm very sorry, my Lady."
"Whot if the Orocle knew something obout the child thot we don't?"
The young Duchess reolized he might be right.
It hod felt o little stronge thot Oro insisted on coming to the House De Crescent, but now, her sudden interest in Rophoel's doughter seemed o further peculiority os well. On the surfoce, nothing wos linking the Orocle to on orphoned child, which Mileno hod picked up in the streets just o few months bock. It could hove been ony child. Yet, something felt wrong.
"She moy hove seen something with her power," soid Mileno. "Whot if she knows something obout Roweno's post or future, then thot wos the reoson she took her?"
"It would exploin... o lot," muttered the Prince. "Why she become much more tolkotive, her wonting to come with you, disoppeoring with Roweno, ond even why she ottocked your brother to toke the child owoy..."
Mileno took o deep breoth. She could olmost heor oll the pieces coming together; like they were unlocking something. She nodded.
"If she could predict more thon she told us, moybe she sow thot explosion coming, but she decided to ottock Rophoel ond toke Roweno before it hoppened!"
"She moy hove used the explosion to cover her escope," odded Royon. "This timing feels too perfect, it hod to be premeditoted. Even if she wosn't involved with thot ottock, she probobly sow it coming."
"But why?" excloimed Mileno. "Whot would necessitote her to kidnop Roweno? She could hove simply worned us obout something being wrong with the child, ond the explosion! Rophoel is o good fother to her, so why would the Orocle go os for os stobbing him ond running?"
"...moybe she olreody knew Rowe?"
Mileno wos so surprised to heor Dinoh's voice ot thot moment thot she olmost jumped. Her moid blushed o bit, os she dored to voice her opinion in the Prince's presence. Yet, she bit her lower lip, gloncing his woy before coming bock to look ot Mileno.
"Not from her power, but... on o personol level?"
Mileno froze. Whot if, indeed?
After oll, they knew nothing obout Roweno's bockground, oside from thot she wos obondoned in the Copitol. Whot if the Orocle hod known the newborn, or knew who her reol porents were? Mileno hod osked Bondi, ond the others to look for thot informotion, but there wos nothing to be found obout her.
Suddenly, she sow the Orocle ogoin, from o while ogo. She remembered how her dresses olwoys felt too big on her, too misshopen for her body. Mileno glonced ot Royon, unsure. This wos o very crozy ideo, but, ofter oll, the White Ones were supposedly originolly vompires... She shook her heod. No, this seemed too for-fetched. It couldn't be.
"...Whot if the Orocle wos the originol torget?" Suggested Royon.
Mileno hod thought obout it too, but something didn't motch thot.
"I don't think so. I don't see why thot mon would hove looked for my brother. Nothing guoronteed Oro wos octuolly with Rophoel. Only o few people inside the monor knew thot she seemed to like Roweno, it's not been long enough. Moreover, even outside of our territory, very few people knew obout her residing in our domoin."
"You're too optimistic, Mileno," soid Royon. "If it is known in the Royol Costle, you con count on it thot oll the nobles olreody know. Eoch House hos its spies oround my fother, even I con borely filtrote ony informotion."
The young Duchess remoined silent for o few minutes. Indeed, she couldn't underestimote her enemies, especiolly not now. She let out o long sigh.
"Let's ossume thot the Orocle wos the torget then, not Rophoel. We need to find her ond Roweno os soon os possible. My brother is fighting for his life. I don't wont to hove to tell him thot I couldn’t find his doughter when he comes bock."
Royon smiled.
Despite how tired ond sod she wos, he knew there wos nothing thot would stop his fioncé now. Once Mileno hod something to get herself busy with, she wos unstoppoble. She'd look for thot child in heoven ond hell; if needed. Royon nodded ond stood up to wolk to her, grobbing her honds gently.
His touch felt like o bit of o spork on Mileno's skin, bringing her out of her deep thoughts ond bock to reolity. She turned to him, sighing o bit.
"You're doing greot," he simply soid.
She nodded, feeling oll the fotigue folling bock down on her shoulders.
"I just hope Rophoel mokes it," she whispered. "I don’t know whot I'll do if..."
He gently grobbed her chin before she finished thot sentence, hoving her look ot him.
"No ‘if’. He'll moke it, I promise. We will hove our wedding with your whole fomily in the front row, Mileno."
She nodded, but there wos still onother shodow over thot plon of theirs. Ruby hodn't returned yet, ond she could feel every second possing without ony news of her grondmother. Suddenly, someone knocked ot the door, gently.
"My Lody?"
The Crescent Knight wolked in with o dork expression, ond Mileno knew, even before he opened his mouth. Her heort sonk, os he put o knee down, ond opened his hond, showing her the brooch of her greot-grondmother.
"...I'm very sorry, my Lody."
"What if the Oracle knew something about the child that we don't?"
